About

Hello, I am Sebastian, a freelance science writer living in Japan. Welcome to my website.

I was raised in the UK where I studied Biology (MBiol - Master of Biology) at the University of York. After graduating, I worked as a medical editor, helping academics from around the world refine their papers before publication.

Deciding to hone my skillset, I returned to university where I studied for an MSc in Microbiology and Infection at the University of Birmingham. Here, I was awarded the Institute of Microbiology and Infection Prize for Academic Excellence for achieving the highest overall grade in the class of 2019 – 2020.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I finished my studies, co-authored an original research article, and began working as a science writer, lending my voice to a variety of subjects. I have since composed over 100 articles, including white papers, web articles, blogs, and eBooks for 38 companies from around the world.

Moving to London, I stepped back from science writing and undertook work as a medical writer. I wished to learn more about the medical communications industry and created a wide range of content for leading pharmaceutical companies. My work spanned diverse therapeutic areas, such as IBD, oncology, CVD, rheumatology, and ophthalmology, and supported both HCP and patient education. Over the course of two years, I aided in the production of webinars, advisory board presentations, online educational tools, industry report summaries, infographics, and much more.

Looking for a change of scene, I waved goodbye to “MedComms”, packed my bags, and left London. Travelling from place to place, science writing became a major preoccupation. I also began data annotating for a large language model. Here, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in areas of biology I had not yet explored and challenge my wits against the growing might of AI.

I have since settled in Japan and aim to apply my skills to make a positive change in the world. Throughout the last decade, I have witnessed firsthand the erosion of education standards, the primacy of money over altruism, and the concession of intellectual honesty to prestige. While these themes have been observed throughout history, I intend to set my face against them, championing the virtues of quality and intellectual honesty.

To this end, I look forward to working with you.

“Working with Sebastian on our publication examining anthroposophic medicine was a seamless experience. His ability to distil complex scientific concepts into precise, engaging language—and his meticulous attention to both academic rigor and editorial detail—greatly elevated the quality of our work. I would recommend him to any researcher seeking a skilled, insightful, and reliable science writer.”

Prof. Harald Sitte
Professor of Psychopharmacology, Medical University Vienna

“Sebastian began his medical writing career with us, and quickly established himself as a precise and thoughtful writer. He proved to be an asset to our team and its great to see he has gone on to broaden his writing horizons with a deeper command of science writing, which I know was always his passion.”

James Seed
Managing Director, Wave Healthcare Communications

“As Sebastian’s dissertation supervisor during the COVID-19 pandemic, I witnessed his remarkable ability to adapt to remote research conditions and produce an outstanding project without access to laboratory facilities. His dissertation was the highest-scoring in his cohort, demonstrating clarity, analytical depth, and near-publication-ready quality. It’s no surprise that he has since established himself as a skilled and insightful science and medical writer.”

Dr Sarah Kuehne
Lecturer in Oral Microbiology, University of Birmingham (former position)
